Real Media Artefact, Front Cover - Kerrang Magazine (4)

The music magazine Kerrang is aimed at people aged 14- 25 as this is the main age group for up and coming rock band enthusiasts. The music magazine Kerrang has a young audience from ages 14-25. This is because the music that is mentioned in the magazine is current and relevant. The main music that is advertised is Rock and Indie.
The connotations of Kerrang is that it is the sound of a guitar string when it is plucked during a song, and this links to the music that is presented in the magazine as bands have guitars which make this sound. The use of an exclamation mark after the name of the magazine shows that the audience is very excited and lively and hyper and everything is exaggerated.
The background image of the band Biffy Clyro is a mid long shot of the artists, the lead singer’s chest and shoulders are on display, however you can only see the other members of the bands heads and a slight shot of their shoulders suggesting that this is the person in the band that is most recognised by the audience
The main colour scheme for text on the front of the magazine is black, white and red. The black and white are block colours and really contrast the red when it is on top of them making the text in red stand out and make the reader drawn to the text in red as this is a brighter and bolder colour.
The red also connotates back to violence and blood which can be linked back to the target audience as they can be violent according to the role models they have in bands they listen to. There is a smaller pull quote undeneath the main title "Unfold the puzzle of life" which is a pun on the artists songs as they have a well known song called "Puzzle".
So this links back to the artist however the writer assumes that the audience will know this as they will be fans of Biffy Clyro reading the magazine. The Kerrang logo itself is very edgy and rough as the inside of the text appears to be smashed, this could be because of the noise that bands make or from the word “Kerrang!” which sounds like a guitar string. The use of making the logo looking edgy and rough relates back to the target audience as they can be seen as violent and coarse at gigs because they are getting into the atmosphere of the gig.

Analysis of first Questionaire

When i asked 30 people at random if they bought music magazines 23 out of the 30 said that they do this means that there is a wide audience for me to create a magazine for.

When I asked where people buy their magazines the majority of the answers i got said that they bought them in supermarkets. This means that the main way of people to access music magazines are in supermarkets. So i will be making a magazine to sell in a supermarket.

The main genre of music magazine that people buy are 'Rock' and 'Indie'. Because this is the most popular genre for a younger generation my music magazine will be for boys and girls interested in Rock and Indie music. The age boundaries i would say for my magazine are going to be between 13 - 24.

The majority of people I asked said that they had a magazine subscription. This shows me that there is a wide audience and market for magazines as the people i asked obviously were interested in magazines so they had a subscription. This information is going to be useful as i can now see that there is a wide audience for magazines as most people are dedicated enough to them to have a subscription.

When i asked thirty people about how much they pay for the music magazine the most popular price people paid was between the range £3.00 - £4.00. My price for my magazine therefore will be priced between these boundaries as these are the most popular.
