Double Page Spread - First Draft

To create my double page spread in my magazine I am going to use one main image on the left hand side of the page and then seep it onto the right hand side just like it says to do in the magazine codes and conventions and like it does in the real media artefacts that I have researched into. There will also be a few smaller images of the artist in fo

I have tried out this idea here in my first draft, I have used a cold font and used the colour blue to decorate the font. However this colour does not fit into the codes and conventions of the magazine as it does not fit into the house style of my magazine that I have

created so far which is blacks, yellows, reds and whites.

Here I have changed the font to red so that it fits into the house style of the magazine. I have also added a pug in the right hand corner of the magazine, this has got some gossip about a new couple that could be dating, this relates to the double page spread article as in the article I plan to ask the artist if she has any updates on her relationship.

I have changed my main image and article completely as the front cover image also changed so to fit in with the continuity I have made this boy my main article as he is the main image on my front cover. The main image like I said would be situated on the left side of the page and would gradually seep onto the left page as I noticed this is a feature used by major music magazines like NME and Kerrang.

Here I have developed my double page spread by adding another image and making the title of the article more visible by putting a black background so the white font shows up on the page clearly.

I have added a bold red piece of text in the right hand corner of the page simply stating that the article is from "Rockin' Out" magazine. The colour being re

d matches with the house style and the smae font that is used on the front cover of the magazine. I have also added the initials of my magazine and the page number at the bottom of the left hand corner so that the reader can navigate easily around the magazine.

This is my first draft for my magazine contents page. It has a bold black title which clearly state what the page is all about.

Front Page - First Draft

This is my first draft of my magazine front cover, it has a bold red font at the t

op which connotates with blood and violence as the audience for my magazine is for 15-19 year old's who are interested in Indie Rock music. This age range is often associated with violence as teenagers are stereotyped to be "Thugs". Here my cover line is simple and has been shaped around the image.

I changed the colour font to black as i thought that this would relate to my target audience and would be clear to read. I have also edited my photo using Photoshop Cs4 which allowed me to darken around the outside of the image for a smokey effect.

I have rotated the image here and played around with the contrast of the picture so it fits into the relevant codes and conventions of a magazine.I have also added a yellow and black striped banner across the front cover, this is to represent "danger tape" as if too say that the magazine is very explosive or dangerous. I have also played around with the title font here and it is "STENCIL", this makes the magazine give off a bad boy looking effect as the font is very strong and straight which gives off the connotations of a very strong opinionated magazine.

Here I have changed the colour of the title of the magazine and the font to make the title a lot more stronger and for a recognisable effect. The font I have used is "Super Black SF" and I will continue to use this font for my other titles in the magazine so that I create my own house style.

I have also began to create cover lines and cover images around the left hand side of the image, the images around the main image are all original images taken by myself and are being featured on the front of my magazine to advertise what me Magazine has got to offer the target audience.

I have changed the image to black and white to see what the difference looks like and I have decided to keep it like this for now until i get new images for my front cover. Notice that I have also played around with the positioning of the title and the issue number and price so that they are both more recognisable and easy to read.

i have also added a circular pug to the bottom of the image that lays on top of the yellow and black stripes along the bottom of the front cover. In the pug it advertises a "Win a day with Pete Wentz!" Pete Wentz is a musician who would be associated with the kinds of music features in my magazine and would appeal to the target audience.

In this image you can see that I have now added a proper cover line which is eye catching but does not distract attention from the main image itself. Also I have re positioned the Banner and the pug so that they are now out of the way of the main image and follow the codes and conventions of a magazine cover.

I have tidied up the Pug in this picture so that it lines up with the inner circle as in the previous image it did not look professional as the pug leaked off of the page. So in this picture you can see that the pug now lines up with the text inside it and also is visible on the page.

I have now created another cover line that is located on the bottom right hand corner just above the magazines bar code. The cover line here has the main title and a little information about the article. Each part of the text is in three different colours, this goes against the codes and conventions of a magazine as usually a cover line is just one colour.

Here I have change the cover line to two different colours which are black and white. These link into other colours that have been used on the front already and match the house style. They are also easy to read however I think that I want to change it so that the cover line is just white so that the reader knows that the cover line is all one story.

Here notice that I have kept the cover line on the right hand corner the same colours. I have also moved the issue date and price to on to the bar-code in the bottom right hand corner as it is out of the way and doesn't distract attention from the main image yet it is still visible to the readers.

I have now tried out the bottom cover line in only one colour and I have decided that it is impossible to read and isn't very eye catching. So I am going to change it back to black and white.

In this image you can see that I have changed the cover line back to black and white and is very clear and attention grabbing to the audience. I have also changed some of the effects on the title of the magazine as before it did not stand out very much and wasn't possibly big enough for the audience to get the full affect by. So I have changed the effect on the text and now bevelled and embossed black around the edges to just make it a bit more edgier. Also I have enlarged the text so that it ever so slightly overlaps the main image.

I now have a new image for my front cover. I decided that I wanted to use a close up shot for my main image as I can capture the main emotion on the models face and so that the audience can recognise the person featured in the magazine more clearly.

I changed the main front cover image once again as I felt that the previous image wasn't cheeky enough for the character that I wanted to portray so I decided to go with this image which illustrates a more cheeky chappy and the lighting in the picture is also a lot more brighter so that the magazine looks up beat and interesting. There is also now text in the banner running along the bottom of the front cover which advertises a free gift for the reader. This enhances sales and make the magazine look like it has got a lot to give for the low price.

The contents page will be featuring a letter from the editor which will explain to the reader what is in the magazine and any acknowledgements to people who have helped with the magazine to make it happen. The

contents page will also have a large image of the cover artist which will have a page number and the name of the artist which allows the reader to navigate easily around the magazine.There is also going to be a long vertical column going down the right hand side of the page, this will feauture titles and band names along with page numbers so the audience can get to the page they want to quickly and easily.

Here is another idea for the contents page layout that I have suggested to use for my Indie Rock magazine, this one is more spread out and seems to be more of better option as the text and the images are not too clumped together so the reader can distinguish where everything on the page is and that it is visible to the eye. The colour scheme will be the same as on the front cover and will remain the same throughout the magazine. The vertical column that is on the right hand side of the page will have band names and article information inside it and will also have th number of the page which it is located on, this will make the magazine very easy to navigate around and will be represented in a neat and tidy way yet will still have a very edgy font which will match with the genre of magazine.

Your planning nneds to be reasonably detailed so play around with different colour schemes, fonts and layouts and choose the best and say the reasons for your decisions rather than make quick decisions as to the name of the magazine and colour based on one idea. planning is different to construction.

Front Page Planning

I have narrowed the name of my magazine down to two choices, either "ROCKIN' OUT" or "DARE". I have decided to call the magazine "ROCKIN' OUT" because I think this will show the genre of the magazine is 'Rock' and will therefore interest my target audience.

These are some of the ideas I have had for the title font and colour. I want the colout to stand out and to have a 3D effect as if it were jumping out the page. To do this is will use the 3D effect on Seriff PagePlus X2. The font that will appear as the logo font has to be bold and very loud as this magazine is going to have connotations of being full of volume and noise so I need a font to represent that.
Something like the 'Stencil' would be appropriate as this gives off a very rebellious theme as the letters are not attatched to each other and have hard edges to represent a rock look and feel which is very rough.
The Magazine name will be presented in a horizontal angle in the top half of the cover, this will allow the audience to recognise and see the name easily.

The fonts I have played around with here don't present a very "Rocky" feeling as the fonts have quite curvy edges and aren't as bold as some of the above fonts i have played around with.
All together I think that I am going to use a more sharper and bolder font for the front cover of my magazine and throughout the magazine as this shows the rough connotations and makes the magazine look very masculine and rebellious to read.



Planning idea:

This plan of a magazine cover is typical for magazines that I have looked at for research, I want to follow the same sort of structure however not include so many words, but instead include pictures which stand out and attract the audience as too many words on the front will not attract attention of people where the magazine is being sold. The Pull Quote I will use on the front cover will be very shocking and will entice people to buy the magazine to read more into the shocking storyline.
I will also include some circular pugs which will include "FREE OFFERS" around the edge of the front cover as this means that the audience will be drawn in by the bright colours and will be intereted in the offer as it is Free. Having prize give aways in my magazine means that the audience will think that they are geting more for their money.

Planning idea:

This is another plan I have done which is a lot more simpler than the one above. This plan is quite similar to what I am planning on doing with the final draft of my magazine, this is because I don't want too many words on the front, instead I want pictures and colourful pugs with little text in them to attract the audience. Having limited amount of text on the front cover will entice the reader to buy my magazine as from the research I have gathered the people I asked said that they prefer to have more pictures than text as text can sometimes clog up the pictures and they loose effect.
Smaller images of bands on the front cver will interest people who like Rock and Indie music as they will recognise bands and they could possibly like them so advertising the variety of bands by smaller images on top of the larger image shows that there is more than just 5 or 6 bands in the magazine. Again I need to use an appropriate cover line and pull quote as this is crucial because this is one of the first things that gets noticed by possible readers. Having a more interesting and shocking cover line means that more people are tempted to buy the magazine to find out more about the story.

How Research With My Questionairres Informed The Planning For My Magazine

The information and answers I have gathered from the questionairres show that the females and males I asked would buy an Indie Rock magazine, the ages that wanted this were between 14-20. The main colour scheme people I asked would like to see in the magazine was black white and pink, to
The information that I also gathered shows me that the people I asked would like to see more images than text as this will get them more interested as images can tell a thousand words and let the audience gather suggestions as to what is going on in the picture. I am going to use a male cover artist as this was the most popular choice picked I found out when looking over the questionairres. In the contents page i will include a large image of the cover artist, a letter from the editor which explains what is in the magazine and any special recognition to people who have helped make the magazine happen. Also I will use smaller images of bands and artists that are also feautured in the magazine as this will represent that there is more than just on artist in the magazine getting aknowledgement from people who like lots of diferent bands.
To match what the people I asked in my questionairre want I will follow the above and make the things that thy have asked for happen.

Well done Lucy- you have caught up well and done some thoughtful analysis here- maybe try to link the front page/contents/double page together and consider the branding and house style of the magazines. In terms of product placement, think about how magazines are distributed- do some institutional research. link images explicitly to coverlines.

Product Placement For Indie Magazine

My magazine is going to be marketed in supermarkets and corner shops where newspapers and other magazines are sold. The reason that i have chosen to sell them here is because there will be people in thesse places wiling to spend money so if they find my magazine front cover interesting then they will buy it.
My magazine is going to be based on indie/rock/alternative music which I myself know a sufficient amnount of knowledge about as I enjoy these types of music.
The audience for my magazine are going to be 15 - 22 year olds who are also interested in this kind of music and who have knowledge about the bands i feauture in my magazine.
I'm going to create a front cover, a contents page and a double pages spread all with the same house style and themes throughout.
The main colour scheme i amd going to follow is going to be black pink and white. I have chosen these colours as this was the most popular colours to use as in my questionairre this is what the most popular colours were. The main image will be of a band who have both female and male members.
On the cover of the magazine i will include the logo of the magazine name (which I haven't decided yet) I will have one main image as the background and will have a few pugs and a pull quote from the main artist who is feautured in the main image.
Most magazines i have analysed and looked at have a main image and a few smaller unrelated images around the picture with captions and a little taster of what the picture is about and page numbers learly labelled so you can find the page and read more.

This is a double page spread about an interview with pop singer Lily Allen in popular indie rock magazine NME. The first thing that is noticed on this page is the image of the singer which covers the whole of the right hand side and begins to sneak onto the left hand side. Lily Allen here is wearing a red checkered shirt and the background is white with black writing which links into the colour scheme of the magazine NME. The pull quote from the feature is in large bold white text on top of a bold black background and has been laid out to look like news paper cuttings. The effect of doing this gives the article a very mature theme to it.

ng or is telling the reader to read the article as her pose entices the audience to look further into the article about her. There is one large drop cap at the beginning of the article which is an "I". The reason the article has started of with one of these is to show to the reader where the feature starts as a lot of text close together can be confusing and not understanding enough. The font that has been used for the pull quote is quite punky and represents the genre of the magazine quite well however as Lilly Allen is usually seen in dresses and skirts she has had to "punk" her look up a bit so she can feature in the magazine.

In this double page spread from the magazine NME the feature is made up of mainly one powerful image. The image of Florence Welch the woman in the article catches your eyes as the colour of her hair, set and outfit are bold against the grey and white backdrop. The image takes up the whole of the left hand side of the feature and also begins to seep onto the right hand side. The woman in the image Florence Welch is a well known singer for her cover of the song "You've Got The Love". The magazine here has tied in the title of her song name into the feature heading. Th article is about Florence taking on the USA and being successful as the article is titled "Usa Got The Love" playing around with the song title here will get the audiences attention and is appropriate to the article. The font for the heading is in the colour grey and is used to look subtle and to contrast against the bolder colour red that Florence is sitting on and has in her hair. She has direct contact with the camera building up a personal relationship with the audience. She is positioned above the ground on a raised platform or box to show her higher celebrity status than the photographer. Her body positioning on the platform is very feminine as her arm is resting very relaxed off of her knee and her other hand is propping her up for support. Her legs are also in a very feminine positioning as they look very curvy and relaxed and her pose looks very natural and effortless. The outfit she is wearing is a skin tight play suit with very high black heels which shows that she has got a very good sense of style and fashion.

The text on the right hand side starts of with a drop capped D which allows the readers to establish where the article begins. This D unlike the rest of the article is also in the same curvy and feminine font that "Got The Love" is in. The text in the feature on the right hand side is also split into three columns which have been aligned to the left. The use of doing this means that the text looks separated out and not all clumped together. The columns of text gradually get longer, this doesn't overwhelm the audience with information but grabs there attention and then once they have grabbed the readers attention the more gritty writing is easier to read as they are enhanced in the writing. The writing itself is hard to decide whether it is formal or not as there isn't any slang used however the topic itself isn't very formal. The Style and whole set up of the magazine is very sophisticated as the page is not at all crowded with images ans text but instead has a structured layout that allows the text and the image to work together.

In this double page spread there is one main image of the band "The Teenagers". In the picture the three members of the band are in a relaxed laying position on a bed with direct eye contact to the camera which builds up a personal relationship with the reader and the artists as you read through the article. The clothes the band are wearing are very casual and appear smart and clean. The band appear to be very clean cut and look relaxed and confident, as though they are trying to make a good first impression. Behind the band there appears to be a series of collages and pictures which link to the bands name "The Teenagers" as the pictures of girls behind them are what you would find in a typical male teenagers room. In the top right hand corner of the picture of the band there is a spiked edge pug which is filled with the colour black with white writing on top reading "NME LOVES" in capitalised letters. The use of having this there shows that the magazine loves this bands music and is supporting the band by interviewing them about their music and advertising their music, encouraging the audience to look into their music, which gains more popularity for the band.

On the bottom left hand corner of the picture of the band there is also a blue box that looks like a ripped bit of paper out of a notebook with information about the band which could be seen as a "Fact file" about the band. The piece of paper is filled blue and has black and white writing contrasting against the colour blue to grab the readers attention.

The two columns of text on the right hand side of the magazine are in a very neat formation as the text starts out a the same place at the beginning of a new line. This makes the feature neat and tidy which contrasts with the bands name "The Teenagers" as teenagers are usually stereotyped as messy and untidy.

The colour theme running throughout this article is blue white and black. The blue has been used as this colour is usually associated with males and as the article is about an all male band it is totally appropriate to have been used. The black and white are there as they are the house colours and are always used in this magazine. On the far right hand side of the page you can see that there are more suggestions as to what bands the audience should look at and in each band heading there is also a synopsis about each band describing what genre the bands are and what tracks to listen too.

This double paged spread extract from Kerrang magazine quite clearly shows you that it is a rock based magazine. The images on the page show this as in the central image you can see that the singer is on a small stage with lights so he is performing in a smaller venue then a pop star would. Also his appearance shows the audience that he is a rock singer as his arms are covered in tattoos.

The connotations of having an arm full of tattoos usually means that you aren't afraid of anything as you've had to go through lots of pain to get those tattoos. There are also images with guys with guitars which supports the fact the music magazine is rock, which shows that they are a band as they are playing live music to a crowd in a venue which also proves that this magazine reports on rock music. In the images of the band there are only male singers on the stage representing the rock stars and there are stereotypically girl fans at the front of the crowd cheering on the band showing the rock star lifestyle that the band live.

The images appear to be the main focus of this double paged spread as the images seem to dominate three quarters of the pages just like the contents page. Having only a little text on the right hand side is a lot more interesting than text as the images allow the readers to come to their own conclusions about what is going on.

The quotation "An evening of rare laughs, fun and pissing about from the Californian crew" which is very informal as there is swearing in the quote which would appeal to a younger teenager as they think that it is cool to swear. The use of having an informal quote like this shows the reader that the interview or article is very gritty and has a lot of information about the band which wouldn't normally be revealed in another magazine.
